Annual Conference

We can’t wait to see you for #LitTX24, when we’ll gather at the Embassy Suites San Marcos, TX.

Monday, July 29 – Arrival, check-in, exhibitor set-up, VIP Reception & Grand Opening
Tuesday, July 30
– Conference Day 1
Wednesday, July 31

The theme of the 2024 conference is “Literacy & Beyond“. We’re planning a variety of sessions that explore this idea from different angles – an exploration of the many ways the world can open up for Texas adults and families once they’ve achieved the literacy level they want and need.

FAQs

Q: Who is the annual conference for?
A:
Anyone interested in adult and family literacy in Texas is welcome at the conference. We believe that the people who will gain the most are instructors and program administrators at all levels, at community-based adult and family literacy organizations and nonprofits.

We use the broadest definition of “literacy”, to include all of Adult Foundational Education: adult basic education, English as an additional language, high school equivalency, digital literacy, and workforce readiness, along with other kinds of teaching and learning.

Q: Isn’t children’s literacy important too?
A:
YES, 100%. And there are many wonderful organizations focused on children’s literacy. Literacy Texas exists to champion literacy for adults and families, who will remain the core focus of the conference and other other efforts.

Q: Should volunteer teachers and tutors attend?
A:
Volunteers are welcome at the conference and we aim to create a schedule that has something for everyone, but the primary events we hold for volunteers are our free regional symposia – read more here. The primary audience for the conference is staff from community-based literacy organizations.

Q: Will you be offering scholarships again in 2024?
A:
Yes! The generous funding from the Texas Workforce Commission that has made scholarships possible in the past has been renewed for another grant cycle. Scholarships are limited in number and restricted to those in Texas literacy 501(c)(3)s. Applications will open in Q1 2024 and will follow a similar process to 2023.

Read more about the scholarship application process here.

Q: Are you offering scholarships again in 2024?
A:
Yes! The generous funding from the Texas Workforce Commission that has made scholarships possible in the past has been renewed for another grant cycle. Applications are now open – scholarships are limited in number and restricted to those in non-federally funded programs at 501(c)(3)s.

Read more about the scholarship application process, and apply.

Q: What about professional development credit?
A:
Yes, we offer PD credit in conjunction with TCALL every year. Each conference attendee receives a personalized email within a week or two following the conference with the details of their professional development, including session titles and hours. Certificates can also be provided to those who need them, upon request.

We’ll be offering PD credit again in 2024. Find more information on the schedule page.

Q: Wasn’t the conference three days, a few years back?
A: Literacy Texas has offered leadership training for many years. For a while, it was a stand-alone, in-person training day – then for a while, it was offered as an optional third day of the conference.

After feedback from participants, we separated the leadership training day from the conference once again. “What Leaders Need” is now an online event, on multiple days spread throughout the year, intended as a more flexible and accessible alternative.

Haven’t attended before and want to get an idea of what the conference is like? Take a look at some of the highlights of our most recent conferences here, including pics and the schedule of breakout sessions and presenters.
